ELECTIVE SESSIONS
State of the Art Surgical Anatomy, Nuances, and Complications Avoidance with the Experts
Monday, July 12, 2010
Saleem Abdulrauf MD
This session is designed to critically analyze intraoperative microsurgical decision making. Using Intraoperative video of actual cases, expert faculty will demonstrate surgical techniques, nuances, and complication avoidance steps.  Topics will include the microsurgery of cerebral aneurysms, vascular malformations, and the techniques for extra-cranial to intra-cranial bypass surgery.  Open discussion regarding variations in techniques and nuances will be key element of this forum.

Video Course for Endovascular Surgery
Friday, July 10, 2009
Andy Ringer MD
This course will provide realistic video sequences or simulation of carotid stenting, aneurysm coiling, liquid embolics, and stroke thrombolysis, as well as expose participants to basic concepts and techniques in neurointerventional surgery, and familiarize them with endovascular device capabilities. Didactic material will be included to ensure that participants gain an understanding of the indications, technical performance and complication avoidance for each procedure.

Stenting of Acutely Ruptured Aneurysms: Has This Become an Accepted Therapy?

ISAT has demonstrated improved outcomes following endovascular embolization in patients considered to be equally treatable by endovascular or microsurgical means. However, there is no prospective randomized data to guide therapy in cases where endovascular treatment requires adjunctive devices such as balloons and more importantly stents. While stents allow better treatment of wide based aneurysms they also need drugs which can complicate the postoperative course of patients with SAH. This discussion will allow us to hear experts from all spectrums of cerebrovascular intervention debate their opinions and engage in a discussion which is sure to be very passionate and informative.

Time vs. Imaging

This session is designed to engage in an emerging discussion about the diagnostic and treatment algorithms for acute ischemic stroke intervention. The initial data suggested that time from onset of symptoms was the best parameter however emerging physiological studies including perfusion studies are allowing an increasing cohort of people to be successfully treated well beyond the traditional time window. This is certainly an important discussion that currently has no clear prospective randomized data to inform us. We will bring experts from both camps to share their opinions and debate their positions which we hope will lead to a better understanding by all of the issues regarding acute ischemic stroke workup and intervention.
